10 Cool Ways to Beat the Heat This Summer at Ohio's Lake Erie Shores & Islands
July 21, 2017
“Is it hot enough for you?” – says just about everyone. This is the time of year when friendly small-talk turns to the heat index and humidity. Some people live for the mega-warmth of late summer. Others consider air-conditioning their best friend. If you are in the latter group, Lake Erie Shores & Islands has ten fun ways to keep you cool when it's hot outside.
1. Break away to the beach.
Nothing is more refreshing than a day at the beach! There are several beach destinations throughout the region that are sure to help you cool down on a warm summer day. Wade in the shallow water and feel the cool breezes off Lake Erie as you relax in the sand. A few Shores & Islands beaches (Main Street Beach, Vermilion and Nickel Plate Beach, Huron) even offer beach rentals so you don’t have to “sweat” lugging all your beach stuff.
2. Take a ferry ride to an island.
Enjoy the wind in your hair while standing on the deck as you take a ferry ride to Kelleys Island, Middle Bass Island, or Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. Sure, the Lake Erie islands are great destinations in themselves, but getting there is half the fun! Your lake transportation can include indoor or outdoor seating, scenic views, and some offer narrated tours of the sites around you. Be sure to wave to a fisherman!
3. Jet Ski on Lake Erie.
Want to experience an adrenaline rush while cooling down? Zoom across the surface of Lake Erie with a Jet Ski or waverunner rental from Endless Summer Island Charters in Marblehead, Jet Ski at the Bay and Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals in Put-in-Bay, North Coast Parasail & Water Sports in Sandusky, and Sawmill Creek Watercraft Rentals in Huron.
4. Enjoy an ice cream treat.
Toft Dairy is famous for their mega-portion ice cream cones. Trust us, the small is plenty. Over 50 flavors are offered at their scooping parlors (Sandusky and Port Clinton), but we recommend the brand-new Lake Erie Cookie Island Monster – a mix of blue vanilla ice cream filled with chocolate cookie pieces and chocolate chip cookie dough. You'll #LakeErieLove it! Other great spots for a tasty ice cream treat include Golly Gee Ice Cream & More, Granny Joe's Ice Creamatorium, Papa T's Ice Cream, Milan Village Drive-Thru, Big Ed's Soda Grill, DQ Grill & Chill, and more!
5. Splash at an outdoor water playground.
You can splish-splash all day long at an outdoor waterpark at Ohio's Lake Erie Shores & Islands. This year, Cedar Point introduced the all-new Cedar Point Shores water park featuring four new water attractions and upgraded amenities on 18-acres of lakeside fun. Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, the popular water park resort, just added a new five slide tower to its existing outdoor waterpark attractions. Lakeside Chautauqua opened the all-new Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus with a lap pool, zero-depth entry pool, a two-flume waterslide, and children's play area. Whether sliding down a variety of slides, splashing in the treehouse, or tubing; there is guaranteed fun for the entire family at The Watering Hole Safari & Water Park.
6. Sip a frozen drink.
There's nothing like a refreshing drink to cool you off on a hot summer day. Try the famous Brandy Alexander from the Village Pump on Kelleys Island – a local favorite. The Keys at Put-in-Bay features the famous “Fat Tuesday” frozen drinks; best enjoyed at a waterfront table. If you happen to be in Sandusky for sunset, don't miss the “Freighter in the Bay” drink special at Dockside Café – a yummy rum punch concocted whenever someone spots a freighter coming into Sandusky Bay.
7. Paddle Lake Erie.
Kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding, have grown in popularity among local water recreation activities. Plus, it's an invigorating treat if you do happen to fall off! Check out Portage River Paddling Co. in Port Clinton, Kayak the Bay, LTD, Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals or Bay Paddleboarding in Put-in-Bay, NALU Standup Paddle & Surf in Marblehead, and West River Paddle Sports in Vermilion.
8. Sip a cold one at a brewery.
Ahhh! A freshly-brewed craft beer can be especially refreshing. Grab a cold one at one of these local hot spots: Catawba Island Brewing Company, Kelleys Island Brewery, and Put-in-Bay Brewery & Distillery.
9. Cruise the waterfront on a Segway.
Want to cruise along the lakefront without breaking a sweat? Take it easy with Sandusky Segwave, offering guided tours and the perfect way to feel the breeze while exploring the beautiful paths and byways that bring Sandusky's past to life.
10. Cool Culture.
Check out a local museum, such as the Liberty Aviation Museum or Merry-Go-Round Museum, or catch a performance at one of our local theatres including the Sandusky State Theatre. You'll stay cool out of the sun and soak in some culture at the same time!
Share your experiences with your friends and they'll all be saying, “how did you get so cool?” The answer? Lake Erie Shores & Islands, of course! What's your fave way to chill out in the summer?
